Arthur Baker, Ft. Tim Wheeler
"Glow"
Arthur Baker releases 'Glow,' a collaboration with Tim Wheeler of Ash.
The 'Arthur Baker Extended Mix' kicks off with defiant kick-drums, sliding guitars and beer-stained drawled vocals before the full length "Jagz Kooner" mix drops like Shellshock-era New Order. The "Darren Emerson" re-rub drops cheeky synths over tribal clicks, leading us to the "Freelance Hellraiser's" mix which builds around ebbing electronica and acid waves before ‘Si Begg's dub kicks off with buzzing bass dropped over mutated breaks.
"When you make a dance record the objective is clear – to make people dance and have a good time," says Arthur. "You really can't take it too seriously." "Glow" had received a stream of great responses over the years and one long-standing fan of the track is Underwater head-honcho Darren Emerson.
Over the years both Arthur and Tim, always separately, would meet up with Darren at various festivals and nights out, where Darren would claim his love of the track and his desire to remix it. Finally, one drunken night in Brixton in '05 it was decided that Underwater Records would finally release it with new mixes.
Needing no introduction, Arthur Baker is one of the few producers who can actually lay claim to having changed dance music history, making the first electronic hip-hop record, "Planet Rock" with Afrika Bambaataa. He went on to pioneer cut 'n' paste sampling tunes long before "Beat This" and "Pump Up The Volume" with "Put The Needle to The Record". His early remixes were among the first to create new rhythm tracks and employ breakdowns and he's as at home working with Bob Dylan or Mick Jagger as he is Ash or Blak Twang.
More recently, Arthur's series of "Return To New York" parties went on to become an international brand, having hosted regular nights in Barcelona, Paris, Toronto, Lisbon and Ibiza plus various parties in the USA, including an annual Winter Music Festival Party - the first of which featured 2 Many DJs, The Rapture, LCD Soundsystem & Peaches. 2003/2004 saw Arthur managing and executive producing The Loose Cannons whilst in 2005 he executive-produced Princess Superstar's "My Machine".
